Biography

1200px-El_Pais_logo_2007.svg.png

Sissy is the voice and the image of Sicily.

A superb singer who's precious music immediately transports us to the streets and fields of some southern people full of life and art. Something very different, worthy of the utmost attention.

– Javier Limon, 7-time Grammy Winner

Sissy Castrogiovanni’s musical roots are deeply grounded in the rhythms, colors, and scents of her native Sicily, while opening toward an international vision shaped by a unique and eclectic language, where World and Mediterranean influences blend with the harmony of contemporary jazz and an innate sense of melody.

The result is an unmistakably personal artistic voice, capable of transforming the Sicilian dialect into a contemporary, refined, and universal instrument.

An award-winning Sicilian singer-songwriter, producer, and educator, Sissy has toured across Europe, the United States, and South America, and has collaborated with international artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Jack DeJohnette, and Latin Grammy–winning producer Javier Limón.

Her album Terra was the first record entirely sung in Sicilian to reach the GRAMMY Awards first-round ballot in four Jazz categories, marking a historic milestone for the Sicilian language and culture on the international music scene.

The media describe her style as “Sicilian Jazz,” an original and distinctive language in which Sicilian is used in a contemporary, non-folkloric way, opening tradition to new artistic visions.

Leading publications such as DownBeat and Jazziz Magazine have praised the emotional intensity of her live performances, her vocal control, and the extraordinary range of her voice—qualities she now also shares in her role as faculty at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she mentors the next generation of international artists.

Sissy Castrogiovanni is also internationally recognized for her ongoing cultural work promoting Sicily and the Sicilian language worldwide through music, education, and artistic initiatives.

"Vivacious Sicilian chanteuse Sissy Castrogiovanni impressed an SRO audience with her mastery [..] Castrogiovanni floated effortlessly through octave-jumping scatting and vocalese forays. Her version of Chopin’s majestic Nocturne in Eb Major, demonstrated the singer’s emotional range and precise sense of pitch."

"The audience was thrilled by [...] smoothly rendered workouts of Mediterranean-inspired sounds led by bluesy vocalist Sissy Castrogiovanni.."

"Castrogiovanni exhibits her expansive, gorgeous voice with melodic, soulful songs sung entirely in Sicilian dialect. International beauty full of charm and dynamic personality, the Sicilian diva could probably sing her songs in Esperanto and they'd still sound soulful and dramatic."
